Journal 8

The active reading is kind of hard, because the stories are too short and are all very different. The weakness while reading this book is it’s hard to get into since every story is so different from the last one. At the same time, it’s nice to not know what kind of person and occupation story to expect next.
My favorite profile from Callings so far is Dekalb Walcotts Jr. He was a young boy who looked up to his father and started a tradition by becoming a second generation fire fighter. When Mr. Walcotts Jr says, “I was a kid who wanted to grow up and be just like his daddy. Back in the nineties, when Michael Jordan was really famous and everybody wanted to be like Mike? Well, Mike as good- but me, I wanted to be like Dekalb Walcott. You were my Michael Jordan (pg56).  This was an important quote to me because I feel the same way about my dad. I’ve always looked up to everything he’s done.
The reasons I would chose to stay in Ohio is because it’s been home to me for almost nineteen years, my family is here, and family means everything to me. I couldn’t imagine not being able to see them very often. If for some reason I was going to move it would be to California, because I absolutely love the ocean and I’ve always wanted to know what it was like to live in LA. It might be nice to get out and explore a little bit. It would give me the opportunity to meet new people and pursue a career I might not be able to do here in Ohio.

The big city has so many more opportunities than Ohio does.

  1. I agree with you on the opportunities that Ohio has and how you want to get away because that is what I want to do as well.

  2. I relate to you by how you always look up to your dad.
